Global Musicianship as Performer Teacher and Leader (ALC 237/437)
Tuesdays 1:35-2:25pm, 1 credit with Dr. Crystal Sellers Battle
This course will look at how global musicianship work dictates the work of a musician as a performer, teacher, and leader of a music organization. Read this short interview with course instructor Dr. Battle below:

Why is a class like this important, particularly right now?
At this time in history, it takes more than being an incredible musician to be successful and to provide music that people will be interested in. Global musicianship ensures that our music is representative of the culture of ours and the community with whom we are engaging, something that we need most imperatively at the moment.”

What can students expect from this course (learning format, topics covered, etc)
“This is a very discussion-based course so it will be important for students to be prepared to engage in conversation. It isn’t about note-taking and regurgitating information, it is about finding new ways to engage with music based on the discussions from the class and the projects assigned.

What are you most looking forward to from this class?
“Every year, the students help me to think in innovative ways about how to rethink the classical music community and the work that we do as musicians daily. Even more so, how can we improve it.”

Entrepreneurial Thinking (ALC210/410)
Fridays 9:35-11:25am, 2 credit with Professor James Doser
An entrepreneurial person is one who transforms an idea into an enterprise that creates value. Musicians have been entrepreneurial thinkers throughout history, and continue to be so. In this course, students envision, develop, and present a Capstone Project, which is a project, initiative, product, business, or other entrepreneurial idea chosen by the student. Essential concepts covered in this class include idea generation, assessing potential value and feasibility, market analysis, writing for business, developing marketing strategies, budgeting, types of business structures, funding, contracts, legal issues, and best practices for effective presentations.  Read this short interview with course instructor James Doser below:

Why is a class like this important, particularly right now?
Students often forget that they have many non-musical skills and passions that can be leveraged to create a unique and successful career in music. We talk about how those skills can help them provide unique value and experiences to their audiences and communities.

What can students expect from this course (learning format, topics covered, etc)?
Students can expect to develop a plan to launch an idea of their own choosing that culminates in a final presentation and proposal.

What are you most looking forward to from this class?
Seeing how each student applies the process of entrepreneurial thinking in unique and creative ideas that are meaningful to them.
