- Bachelor’s degree or higher in music
- Experience teaching and conducting band or orchestra and instrumental students
- Good communication skills to work effectively with students, parents, administrative staff, and other conducting staff as well as with local music educators and private teachers
- Well organized with attention to detail and planning
- Ability to set up and clean up chairs, etc. before and after each rehearsal and performance
- Sound judgment to exercise discretion with confidential information, such as tuition assistance needs and special health accommodations for students
- Commitment to come prepared and early to each rehearsal/concert and offer an enriching experience to the students
The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes announces an opening for Co-conductor of the Young People’s Orchestra.
The Co-conductor will be an independent contractor, whose term of 9 months will run from September 2024 through May 2025, with the possibility of renewing.
The Young People’s Orchestra (YPO) provides advanced challenges and opportunities for the development of instrumental music students in a youth orchestra setting in the region served by the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes (OSFL). Students from Corning, Elmira, Ithaca, and the Twin Tiers come together to rehearse weekly, learn and grow musically, and prepare three public concerts each year. One of those concerts includes a side-by-side concert at
the Clemens Center with the professional musicians of the OSFL under the baton of Toshiyuki Shimada, a conductor of international acclaim and former conductor of the Yale University Orchestra.
- Plan, prepare, and conduct Sunday afternoon rehearsals 4:30-6:00 in Horseheads, NY, and concerts in the
Elmira-Corning area, according to the year’s schedule coordinated with both Co-conductors - Select appropriate repertoire according to the students’ abilities and within budget
- Actively recruit and audition new students (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion)
- Assess students’ abilities and assign orchestra seating arrangements
- Coordinate parent volunteers to serve as chaperones, supply snacks, etc.
- Communicate regularly with the Co-conductor, the Music Director, the Executive Director and the office staff
- Cooperate with the rented facility’s expectations for COVID safety protocols and cleaning up after each
rehearsal/concert - Comply with all federal, state, and local health and safety guidelines
This position requires approximately 2 hours of contact teaching time per week. Sufficient preparation is expected.
Compensation will be a professional service stipend paid monthly over nine months, September through May. A criminal background check will be conducted.
