1 week of music and tech for high school age

This 5-day summer camp is for Rochester (NY) area students entering grades 9-12 and interested in:

  • music production
  • audio engineering
  • electronic music
  • digital composition

This camp is made free, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Hands-on experience with music technology fundamentals

  • Experience and training with:
    • sound synthesis
    • digital audio workstations (DAWs)
    • MIDI sequencing
    • audio recording techniques
  • One month’s subscription to BandLab
  • Free website domain through WIX*

Program Schedule

Future Leaders of Music Technology

Monday, July 15 – Friday, July 19, 2024
8:30 am – 4:00 pm, daily
Eastman School of Music
Day 1: Introduction to Music Technology
  • Overview of music production equipment and software
  • Basics of sound waves and digital audio
  • Hands-on activities with synthesizers and MIDI controllers
Day 2: Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and MIDI Sequencing
  • Introduction to popular DAWs such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and BandLab
  • MIDI sequencing and programming techniques
  • Building beats and rhythms using software instruments and drum machines
Day 3: Audio Recording and Editing
  • Principles of microphone placement and recording techniques
  • Editing and processing audio recordings
  • Multitrack recording and mixing exercises
Day 4: Electronic Music Production
  • Exploring synthesizers, samplers, and electronic effects
  • Creating original electronic music compositions
  • Introduction to live performance, DJing techniques, and artificial intelligence
Day 5: Final Projects and Showcase
  • Collaborative project work based on students’ interests and skills
  • Rehearsals and preparation for the final showcase
  • Presentation and performance of student compositions and projects
