I am seeking funding to develop a novel educational toolkit in consultation with URMC peers, to be piloted and evaluated during my upcoming guest residency at SUNY Geneseo. Brass performer-pedagogues inherit a canon of educational literature which has become increasingly concerned with the “how”. Communication and collaborative ‘team science’ have allowed researchers to address performer needs; however, information sharing between scientific and musical communities still lacks translational compatibility. Pedagogical training becomes innovative when competencies are established which address this disparity. Of particular importance is the educator’s capacity to contextualize scientific discovery within their teaching praxis—bridging research with technique and performance practice. My toolkit affords musicians an opportunity to answer their “how” through development of template research protocols and corresponding data acquisition devices designed specifically for accessibility. This grant enables a educational partnership with individuals at URMC who have field-specific expertise in wearable device development, signal processing, and machine learning.
