Bio:

Sumner Truax is an associate in Covington & Burling’s Washington, D.C. office. He focuses his practice on complex litigation and has experience representing clients in all stages of litigation from the initial stages of an investigation, discovery, trial, and appeal. Sumner maintains a varied pro bono practice. He is currently representing six fathers and their children who were separated at the border by the Trump Administration. He has also represented incarcerated people in various post-conviction proceedings. As a soloist and chamber musician, Sumner has performed for audiences in North America, Europe, and Africa. Sumner earned his Master of Music degree in saxophone performance and literature and a certificate in Arts Leadership at the Eastman School of Music. At Eastman, he served as a teaching assistant to Dr. Chien-Kwan Lin. Upon graduating from Eastman, Sumner taught saxophone performance and pedagogy at Lawrence University for three years prior to attending law school. Sumner also holds a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance and instrumental/general music education from Lawrence University.
