Life in the Pit
One significant difference between working onstage and working in the pit is the physical environment. By comparison with most stages, many pits are cramped, dark, and cluttered. To add insult to injury, pits are at the bottom of a theater’s gravity well, causing most loose objects and gases, regardless of origin, to end up in the pit -sometimes causing serious injury to musicians or their instruments along the way. And, because of the cramped conditions, pits can expose musicians to even higher noise levels than are experienced by musicians onstage.
For our Day 2 discussion, we’d like to ask the panelists to assess the relative importance of these various risk factors, to describe their personal experience with the dangers of the pit, and to provide some advice to their colleagues (and employers) in dealing with these problems.
And we welcome the addition of Ann Lobotzke, Principal Harpist of the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, to our panel.
