Innocents Abroad
For Day 4, I’ve asked the panelist to address the following questions:
What’s it like being an American in your orchestra? Are there language issues (and if so, how did you deal with them?) Do ex-pats socialize with the majority group? Are there issues in rehearsals related to language? (When I was in London Ontario, for example, there used to be a regular weekly hockey game (at 11:30 PM on Tuesday, if I recall). More Canadians than non, but I think Brian used to participate. But we’d all go skating in the park after concerts in the winter (in tails, no less.))
What’s it like to be an American and live in the majority culture? Do you feel isolated? Homesick? Do you keep up with news from the States? Do you correspond with folks back home? How do you stay in touch with family back home? Do you come back to the States on a regular basis to visit?
