Refreshingly diverse in their backgrounds, the members of Tonality are united under a common goal of social justice as expressed through wide-ranging vocal art. This case study surveys the impetus behind the formation of Tonality. It reviews some of the group’s early programs and highlights its ability to stir audiences to action at its performances. Tonality’s effectiveness lies in live performance, and the themes it embraces have the power to move audiences beyond Los Angeles. Its director contemplates how touring might work with the group’s bold artistic mission.

Omaha Under the Radar is an experimental arts festival that seeks to empower leading-edge performers in Nebraska’s largest city and educate local audiences through avant-garde programs. The early success of the summer festival has rested on its innovative programming, venue partnerships, and community education. In addition to the local artists it promotes, Omaha Under the Radar solicits performers from around the country to contribute to the festival. This study examines how the festival organizers continue to focus on the local community in the face of increasing national interest from outside performers. The case concludes with a scenario involving a large, unrestricted gift that could challenge the organizational priorities of the festival.

While unfolding an established three-year strategic plan to guide the enterprise, prospects materialize for a residency at a new museum in Los Angeles. Amid this scenario, questions at the board level are raised about how an organization that has grown up without a home base for productions should react to the chance to forge a relationship with an institution that could bolster—or hinder—its success.

It offers a broad portfolio of programs that address the current imbalances seen in musical arts organizations around the United States. On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Sphinx, leadership had been tasked with placing special emphasis on SphinxConnect, an annual gathering of music industry leaders and musicians of color who network and discuss issues of diversity in the arts. The reader is asked to evaluate the success of the inaugural SphinxConnect convention and recommend improvements for the next annual meeting based on broad goals set by the Sphinx for growing and sustaining minority representation in the musical arts.
