Who is Your Customer?

Well, Black Friday 2016 and Cyber Monday 2016 are now passed, but this still seems an opportune time to think about our “customers.” If we think of ourselves or our ensembles like a business, we should be thinking about who are customers are and what they want, right?  Isn’t that what business do? (Answer: Yes)

It is important to know who your customers are, and who they might be in the future. So if you have your own ensemble, that means knowing who your audience is.  Who comes to your concerts? Do you have a sense of their age, occupations, interests, etc? Do you survey them somehow?  What if you sell something, like CDs or arrangements or compositions? Who buys those from you?  You might have different types of customers for different products and services. Knowing who your customers are helps you create events, initiatives, and offerings that are relevant to people.  If you create with your customers in mind, you are more likely to create something that is engaging and interesting to them – something they want to buy / experience / see / hear, etc.
