The Importance of Having Some Basic Audio Gear
August 8, 2017 In: Sound BitsEvery musician needs a way to record themselves and others, whether it is for the purposes of reviewing your practicing, or for much loftier goals like recording audio or video for distribution. As a freelance musician, or ensemble, or organization, you need to be documenting your work – your projects and initiatives – and ideally you would do that in multiple ways – photos, videos, and audio recording. And with the massive popularity of YouTube, it is so easy now to record something, upload it, and immediately access millions of potential fans. You don’t need a whole lot of gear to get started. Perhaps you already have a computer, and perhaps it has a basic audio program on it like Garage Band. You can also download some basic audio programs for free, like Audacity.
Then you will need at least one decent microphone (I just dug out a MXL 990 from my closet, which is $97 on Amazon). Professional microphones won’t just plug in to your computer, you will need an audio interface that will connect the mic to your computer. Audio interfaces are pretty reasonable and can be fairly portable so that you can take your little recording studio most anywhere (Focusrite Scarlett Solo, $99.99 on Amazon ) (Behringer U-Phoria UMC22, $39.99 on Amazon).
Between your computer, a decent mic (mic stand and cable also needed), and an audio interface, you can do some good basic recording. Combine that with a video camera, or even your phone camera and basic video production is within your reach. Looking for recording tips? Check out this site: https://ehomerecordingstudio.com
