New Season: New Goals
August 23, 2021 In: PRJC NewsWith the impending start of the new academic year and professional-orchestra seasons, the summer often provides time to reflect and set goals–personal, professional, and musical–for the new year. We recently came across a short article by Dr. Noa Kageyama, faculty member at The Juilliard School, published by The Bulletproof Musician. In the article, Dr. Kageyama offers four recommendations for effective goal setting:
- Set specific, vs. general goals
- Set difficult, yet attainable, goals
- Set both short-term and long-term goals
- Strive for process-driven goalsĀ
Dr. Kageyama explores and offers thoughtful insight into each recommendation, including the nuances and challenges each presents. As musicians and arts-professionals, it easy to read Dr. Kageyama’s writing solely through the lens of developing one’s professional craft. It seems more-important than ever to be investing not just in our professional development, but personal well-being. For ever professional goal we set–for ourselves or our organization–might we also set a personal growth/development goal? As musicians, they are after-all, inexorably linked!
