How You Can Earn Money Using Skype & FaceTime
August 1, 2017 In: Sound BitsLet’s take a moment to step back and recognize how amazing technology is (when it works!!!).
Ok, with that in mind, it’s truly mind bending how many new opportunities have been provided by communication technology just in the past few years. For example, where guest speakers and visiting artists previously had to travel long (and expensive) distances to deliver a talk, now virtual lectures and presentations are a common alternative. This isn’t to say that in-person interactions aren’t important or even ideal, it’s just that virtual opportunities now present increased possibilities – increased options.
So what does this have to do with musicians? Well, think about what you do and how you could use Skype and/or FaceTime in your career. Might you be a good person to be interviewed for a college course? Chances are you know someone who is teaching a course that is relevant to your work, and chances are they utilize guest speakers, both virtual and in person. I certainly do in my classes! And even for guests who visit our class virtually and answer student questions for an hour, I am able to offer them an honorarium. So let your friends and colleagues know what you are doing and keep people updated on all the exciting things in your career. Chances are, someone within your network will be interested in having you do a virtual coaching session, lecture, or interview. Also, could you offer private lessons via Skype or FaceTime? What about career coaching or advising students on strategies for getting into their top choice college/graduate school? What about instrument repair tips, or a mini lesson on how to prepare yourself on concert day? The possibilities are endless! So, make the technology work for you, and make some income at the same time.
