How to Make Your Concert an Experience
July 20, 2016 In: Sound BitsThink about what it feels like when you walk through a Disney Park. My response is always, “they have thought of everything!” It seems as though every detail has been considered in an effort to make the visitor experience as wonderful as possible.
How can we translate this to classical music concerts? I think a good starting point is to sit down and try to “think of everything.” Think about your audience and their experience from the moment they are looking for a parking space, to the moment they drive away. Think about their experience sitting in the space before the concert starts, how the concert starts, how the transitions between pieces are managed, if there is any speaking from the stage, etc. What can you do as part of the concert to give the audience an even better experience than they were expecting? All of these things may change based on your particular concert, your programming, and your venue. Nevertheless, trying to put yourself in the shoes of an audience member and think through every aspect of the experience is a valuable exercise. Try it out for your next concert!
