3 Things Musicians Should Do Over the Summer
July 12, 2016 In: Sound BitsSomewhere there is probably a post or a meme that follows “3 Things Musicians Should Do Over the Summer” with: 1. Practice 2. Practice 3. Practice. It’s sort of a running joke in musician circles; the answer to every question could be “practice.” But practicing doesn’t solve all problems, and there are indeed other things to do. So here are three things to do over the summer (in addition to practicing):
- Plan – Summer is a great time to reflect on the last semester, or last year, or last 2 years, etc. Similarly, you can likely find some time to think about what you would like to accomplish next semester, next year, or the next 2 years. Start by thinking about some big goals that you would like to achieve, and then think about what action steps you need to take in order to accomplish them. Thinking ahead at least a year is a great investment of your time and helps you to make things happen that you want to happen, rather than just waiting and seeing what happens.
- Update – Does your website need updating? Do you need to backup your computer files? Do you need to upgrade a piece of software you use? Do you have contacts listed on a piece of paper and want to enter them into MailChimp so you can send them an occasional newsletter? Do you think you might need a new accessory for your instrument over the next year? Take time to think about the tools you use and how you can improve/update them.
- Unplug – Spend some time outside. Musicians typically spend a lot of time inside, and we all spend a considerable amount of time connected to devices such as phones, tablets, and computers. Take some time, even if it is just small increments, and enjoy the outdoors in whatever way you prefer. Spend some time away from those devices – unplug and refuel.
