]]> Aaron Tan won a grant to support a recording project to raise awareness of a largely forgotten collection of French solo organ music curated by Charles-Marie Widor and Alexandre Guilmant—L’orgue moderne—whose publication dates span from 1894 to 1930 and features composition by organ students of the Paris Conservatoire and other accomplished young composers of organ music. Many of these pieces are of moderate difficulty, and would contribute greatly to an era of organ repertoire that has been limited to the works of a handful of major composers. The goal of this initial proposal would be to create a high-quality video and audio recording of ten pieces from this series on a historic Cavaillé-Coll organ that would have been contemporary to the compositions.

Toronto being a very dense and expensive city, it is often difficult or impossible for musicians who do not come from a strong financial background to practice at home. Musicians are commonly forced to accept far-from-ideal situations, as you can read about in the additional uploads, through the testimonies of some of these musicians. MPR also creates a valuable opportunity for host businesses to make passive income by participating.

]]> The Department of Music Teaching and Learning was pleased to sponsor the visit of Jesper Andersen (Royal Danish Academy of Music) and his colleague Razvan Paisa (Aalborg University, Copenhagen) from November 22-25, 2025. While at Eastman, Andersen and Paisa (a) presented their research related to cochlear implants to our Music for Special Learners course (MTL 216), (b) participated in a research study at Eastman designed to replicate their own work related to perception of melodic contour, (c) presented on the research process to students in the Quantitate Research Course (MTL/TH 505), and (d) met with faculty who are proposing an interdisciplinary center for music and audio engineering that is similar to the work they do in Copenhagen. It was an inspirational residency and we thank IML for their departmental support.

Floris Van der Veken, a DMA student and Arts Leadership Certificate of Achievement candidate, was awarded a Special Opportunity Grant to attend the Impuls Festival, the 14th International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music. At the festival, Floris engaged in meaningful collaborations, built an international network of peers, and participated in in-depth discussions on contemporary music and the evolving landscape of the music industry. Reflecting on the experience, Floris highlighted the opportunity to explore career development with renowned saxophonist Marcus Weiss, delving into both the practicalities of running a contemporary music ensemble and the potential of interdisciplinary artistic collectives. The Impuls Festival offered a unique and intimate window into today’s new music scene, enabling Floris to connect with leading voices in the field, an experience made possible through the support of the Special Opportunity Grant.

]]> Eastman Masters student and ALP certificate candidate Jack Earnhart recently completed a vocational education program in electrical and mechanical engineering with funding awarded by the Institute for Music Leadership’s Special Opportunity Grant. This funding allowed Jack to complete a facility tour, gain valuable repair experience, and education in fundamentals of AC/DC motors at Pro Rebuilders, Inc, in Gates, New York. The program also allowed him to get practical experience in linear motion systems design, particularly with the theory and optimization of advanced mechanical motions. Reflecting on the experience, Jack states, “Knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems optimization extends past simple repair work is enabling me to develop innovative design solutions across various industries. An element of my role as project manager at the Eastman Laboratory for Performance Science (formerly Performance Ergonomics Lab) is to future-proof design capabilities and be at the forefront of performing arts medicine treatment solutions. As technology continues to progress, knowledge of what makes electric wearable solutions possible will be essential in driving innovation and ensuring the development of cost-effective devices.”
